The Germantown Municipal School District has announced the appointment of April Miller as the new Houston High School Assistant Principal.
Miller brings 15 years of educational experience to the job.
After spending a decade serving as a school counselor in Clarksville, Tennessee, she transitioned to serving in administrative roles in both Memphis and Nashville during the past five years.
“I was excited to carry out heart work as an Assistant Principal in Memphis Shelby County Schools and cannot wait to pursue this work with Germantown Municipal School District,” said Miller.
Miller holds her Ed.S in Instructional Leadership from Austin Peay State University, a Bachelors in Psychology, and a Masters in Counseling and Personnel. Currently, she serves as an adjunct professor in Human Performances at Southwest Tennessee Community College teaching others effective counseling techniques.
The bedrock of her counseling skills will make her an adept leader to round out the new leadership team at Houston High School who recently also welcomed Marvin Townsend as an assistant principal.
School leaders noted that Miller is personable, transparent, and excels at active listening and problem solving.
“I always like to find the why to provide context as I work with a student, a staff member or a parent,” explained Miller.
In 2017, she published a book about the impact of non-academic factors on ACT scores, a long research project connecting her school counselor roots to her current role as a change-maker in administration.
Miller has guided graduation teams of teachers, coaches, and school counselors around the work of improving graduation rates, Naviance, ACT Prep, and Ready Graduate metrics.
“Mrs. Miller is exactly what we were looking for,” said Principal Rob Taylor. “Besides an impressive resume, we believe that she will be able to support our staff and students at Houston High School with the right skills at the right time”.
Miller is excited to join the district and get to work. Her husband, Scott Miller, is an exceptional education teacher in Bartlett Schools and she is a mother to three children; Sidney (16), and twins Malia and Terrell (12).
In her spare time, she is a devoted member of her church and enjoys singing.
