It was rivalry week as the undefeated and second ranked Collierville Dragons (7-0) took on the tenth ranked Houston Mustangs (5-2) last Thursday.

Collierville was coming off a tough victory against Germantown while Houston was looking to bounce back from a loss against the Bartlett Panthers.

The Dragons saw Senior Logan Johns start under center as their normal starter Aiden Glover was out with a leg injury. Johns’ first drive ended in a blocked punt and Houston struck quickly going up 6-0.
Another three-and-out by Collierville was not taken advantage of as sophomore QB Chandler Day was picked off on their own 41. The Dragons failed to get a first down again as they did not convert a fourth down try.

The first quarter ended with the Mustangs up 6-0.

Just two minutes into the second quarter, junior phenom Damon Sisa for Houson breaks off a 33 yard touchdown run, putting the Mustangs up 13-0. Collierville failed to get a first down again, going three and out.

The ensuing possession led to a touchdown pass by Day giving Houston a 20-0 lead which would be the half time score.

Houston scored rather quickly coming out of the half to go up 27-0. The Dragons tried to get something going but saw a 48 yard touchdown called back on an Offensive Pass Interference call.
The Mustangs (6-2) slayed the Dragons (7-1) to force a 3-way tie atop the 6A Region 8 standings.

When asked what Coach James Thomas learned about his team in this game, he responded, “We learned a lot coming off a disappointing loss to Bartlett last week. We talked about being the tougher team and imposing our will on our opponent. We won the game up front on both sides of the ball.

“A win like this let’s you know we can compete with anyone,” he added. “When we can get the ground game going like we did it’s demoralizing to the other team. When we stop the run on defense like we did, it makes the other team frustrated and one dimensional. Good news is we can still get better!”
Collierville will play at Bartlett next Friday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m. Houston will play at Arlington at the same time on Oct. 21.
