Houston High School senior Antonio Scott is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Don Poier Memorial Scholarship given by the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis and the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation. Scott was officially awarded the scholarship Tuesday night at the Grizzlies game against the Chicago Bulls.

Accompanied by the scholarship’s namesake’s widow, Barbara Poier, Scott and three family members were given an exclusive tour of the Don Poier Media Suite at the FedEx Forum and accessed the behind-the-scenes experience of the broadcasting centers for the Memphis Grizzlies.

“It was one of those nights I’ll never forget. Meeting Mrs. Poier and conversing with her about the scholarship and what it meant to her was an experience I’ll always cherish. This is the woman who’s been through it all and had the courage to be an ancillary to the organization even after Don’s death,” Scott said when recapping his night. “She kept saying how much this meant to her and all I could do was reiterate my thankfulness and gratitude for believing in me.”

Scott is the 10th anniversary recipient of the $2,500 scholarship.

During halftime, Barbara Poier and Memphis Grizzlies General Manager Chris Wallace presented Antonio with the scholarship plaque.

While maintaining a 3.8 grade-point average at Houston High, Scott is actively involved through leadership and service as the current Senior Class President and was voted the Mr. HHS senior superlative.

A state qualifier for the Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League’s state competition all four years of high school, Scott has been the President of the Speech and Debate team since his sophomore year.

His accomplishments include being one of three awarded the Keeper of the Dream award by the National Civil Rights Museum in 2015 and Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, The Pony Express.

Scott plans to attend the University of Memphis in the fall to double major in Journalism and Communication.

The Don Poier Memorial Scholarship was created in 2006 in honor of the Memphis Grizzlies’ legendary broadcaster. Don was the “voice” of the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1995-2001, and then the Memphis Grizzlies from 2001 until his death in January 2005.

The scholarship assists well-rounded, public high school students living in Shelby County who demonstrate strong character and are actively involved in school and the community.

The Poier Memorial Scholarship recipients are evaluated based on their excellence in academic performance, community involvement and active citizenship, and a personal statement submitted within their application.
